Escaping the Censors!

Hi,

This is Laura's Mom letting you know that China has blocked Xanga and John and Laura are no longer able to access this site. Recently China has cracked down on sites such as these.  In China it is called: The "Great" Firewall.

Please find them at their new site: www.wittysinchina.com. Although John and Laura cannot access this site people outside of China can and there is a link on the new site to direct you here.

John and Laura ask that you would please continue to lift them up to be flexible and understanding of the country He has called them to.

A whole lotta pictures...

Hello dear friends and family! It's been awhile since we've put some pictures on here! We've been busy with the start of the Spring semester. The semester started last Wednesday so we've taught each of our classes once. It's so good to be back with the students -we were happy to see them and they were happy to see us too! We have a busier night schedule this semester and we just learned that our students take 19 to 20 classes!! Seriously...20 classes a semester...each class is 2 hours...these kids are in actual classroom time 40 hours a week! It's hard for us to comprehend!

One thing we're realizing is that with the combination of teaching night classes and our students simply being in class ALL the time...it's going to make hanging out with them a challenge. We ask you to lift this need up - that we would have natural times to hang out with them. The students that are from Chongqing tend to travel home for the weekends...so...we're going to have to be creative. One thing we can do is - create awesome lesson plans that generate conversations!! We're working on that! We also will try to spend "supper" and lunch times with them when possible.

As we mentioned before, it was great to have mom and dad Whitten here! The time with them was encouraging and relaxing! We even had the opportunity to go on a Yangtze River cruise with them (the cruises all leave from Chongqing!). It was awesome to see the gorges before they are completely filled up by the new dam. As we cruised along there would be meter markers on the sides of the mountains! Must be strange to live on a small farm that has a meter marker higher than your land! (see pictures below)

Dad and mom also took us to some fun meals and we adventured around the city. They enjoyed their time here and it was wonderful to see Chongqing through fresh eyes.
It made us really excited about the future ahead of us at Chongqing Normal University! We know this is where He wants us and having mom and dad here helped confirm that. Their perspective and insight was needed. The fact that both John and I's parents are so encouraging and supportive helps so much! We know we can lean on them for support and wisdom! We are truly blessed!

Okay, I know reading a bunch gets boring...here are some recent pictures:

John standing in front of the front door to our apartment

John pointing up toward our apartment windows. We're the second set of blue windows up.

Chongqing is quite well known in China for the workers called "bang bang" (pronounced bong bong)  Just like the picture above they have a bamboo pole and ropes tied to each side. They will carry anything - from small refrigerators on each side...to a couple dozen shoe boxes...baskets full of grapefruits....and even my groceries if they're too heavy. The bang bang men are known to only make around 15-20 Yuan (on a good day) - that's about $1.88 - $2.50! When I can use them I try to, it helps them out a lot! These two ladies are carrying fish - under the fish are some things to weigh them - they might be going to the markets to sell them.

We took my parents to Chaotianmen - the docks where the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers meet. We took the "road less traveled" and found ourselves hiking around dirty docks and hillside...we had a good time though...even though I'm sure the locals thought we were "loco"! We set my camera up on a rock and timed this picture..."now the foreigners are all standing and staring at a rock! What will they do next?" It's really no wonder they watch us with such curiosity!

We found a funny carnival and John and dad rode GoKarts...it was pretty great!

We also walked around and found an antique market...on the way back to the city mom posed with this sign - composed entirely of what we call "Chinglish" - Chinese/English.... the sign reads:  THE TRADITION OF OLD STREET TEAHOUSE IN CHONGQING CITY--OUR INTERPRETATION: OUR BEST TECHNOLOGY IN TEA AND THE BEST ENVIRONMENT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL RESPECTED AND COMFORTABLE.

The view from the 39th floor of the Marriott Hotel in Jeifangbei! We ate a fabulous dinner there with mom and dad for John and I's 2nd anniversary!

They eat quite a bit of rabbit here - this lady's job is to skin them for the customer...it looks like she's taking his "bunny costume" right off! Yikes!

We got on the cruise ship at night - as we were "cruising" away - we snapped this shot of the city...and this is maybe 1/4 of it!

The beginning of the Three Gorges! We were so blessed with sunny days and clear skies!!!

Meter markers on the land show where the water will finally reach. The water has already been filling since 2003 - so this 175M marker probably used to be a lot higher up! Wouldn't it be weird to be a farmer and live with this billboard size reminder of what's to come?!

Dad and mom on the back of the day excursion boat...with the China flag!

One of the gorges is too small to take the cruise boat into - so our day excursion was on little "Jungle Cruise-type" boats. They have props you can take a picture with, John got in full Adventureland character! Makes me laugh everytime!!

Mom holding the tour guide sign! I think she looks so cute in this picture! The bridge behind her will be covered with water by 2008!

Here we are disembarking the boat!
*What we didn't get a picture of - the brass band that greeted us when we got on the ship! It was awesome!!!

We left Dutch home during the cruise (with plenty of food and water)...when we came home he was a little distraught with confusion...he slept in my open suitcase for 2 days after that....he was happy things were back to normal.

Well, I'm not sure if things are ever "back to normal" - we do live in China! As much as we love this place there will always be things that we will never find normal. It's the attitude we choose in those moments that makes all the difference!

Thanks for reading! Love you all!

China invented gunpowder and then...

Ok, so as you can read below Chinese New Year was on February 18...

But I guess nobody got the memo to light all (or even most) of your fireworks off on that night because pretty much every night since then we still hear what sounds like bombs being dropped around our apartment!

Yee Haw! Light 'em if ya got 'em!

Can't wait for the 4th of July -  too bad I can't bring some of these fireworks back.
Something tells me the airlines would never go for it.

Welcome to 4705 and a new semester!

Happy New Year!!!

China turned 4705 on February 18 and we were here for the craziness of 1.3 billion people (China) and 13 million people (ChongQing) celebrating the biggest holiday of the year! We laughed so hard as we stood in the main square as fireworks shot out of the windows of nearly every apartment building!! The square was empty of people because the focus of the holiday (Spring Festival) is spending time with family! So there John and I were....laughing at the hysteria of fireworks shooting in every direction above our heads and the normally bustling square, empty around us...except of course for the rowdy security guards on duty...lighting their own secret stash of fireworks and getting a kick out of John and I's excitment!

Here's a short video of the craziness (as always "related videos" at the end are not ours):

For a holiday that is centered around family it was perfect timing for my parents to come and visit! They arrived on the night of Spring Festival (our equivalent New Years Day)! Just in time for Spring Festival and the arrival of my parents the skies cleared, the sun greeted us each day and the trees all started to bloom!

We have much to write about and fun pictures to share....BUT...

Spring semester starts bright and early tomorrow!!! In the typical crazy style of how things are done here - by 4pm this afternoon (the day before the semester starts at a 30,000 student university in China) we finally had our  teaching schedules finalized. It of course took 3 meetings, 6 phone calls and some rearranging but I think we're pretty sure about what's happening! We never get too sure though...we always plan for a curve ball...or two!!

John and I celebrated 2 years of marriage on February 26! It was fun to have dad and mom here to talk about such a fun and beautiful wedding in Santa Barbara! What a blast these last two years have been...we hope for many many more!

We can't wait to tell you more about our time off, our expectations for a new semester, a wonderful visit from my parents and a new sense of excitment and wonder about ChongQing! Please be patient with us...we'll try to get an update by this weekend!

For now...here's a few awesome shots my dad took of some of the people while he was here! He has a great eye...and contagious excitement for the Chinese people! We'll also be writing a newsletter soon!

Thanks for checking this out - we love to stay in touch as best as we can! Your interest and support for our life in China is so encouraging!

A Welcome Break

Hi Everybody,

We've recently returned to our home here in China after a refreshing time in Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Our organization brings all of its teachers together during the winter break for 9 days of rest, teaching, and corporate fellowship and praise.  It was also a great time to reconnect with other teacher friends we had met during our orientation training in Beijing last August.

Here we are doing our best job to soak up as much sun as possible!

What's really cool about this midyear meeting is that ALL the teachers from our organization attend. That means that the 600+ people who were there traveled from all parts of China, Mongolia, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It was awesome to see all the faces while hearing the stories of how things are going everywhere across Asia!

And on a random note: the name of the conference is the Annual Thailand Conference, or ATC for short - and whaddya know, we're walking around the streets of Chiang Mai and we see this manhole cover!

It was especially fun and encouraging for Laura to see Monica who was there as conference staff!!!  For nearly 2 years before we came to China, Laura and Monica worked together back in southern CA holding down the fort at the home office.

Here I am trying not to look lost as we wandered around the city the day before we left. (I was only sort-of lost...)

Our homecoming to Chongqing was complete when we picked up our cat, Dutch, from a student of mine who had been watching him. I think that his deep expression in this photo really captures just how much he missed us...

And in other news, here's a picture of the newest nephew to the family! Congratulations Tim and Liz! Parker Freet came into the world to greet everybody back on January 21, but the photos weren't released by his press agent until now.

What a cute little guy!

Chinese New Year is this Sunday, and so far our experience here over the last few days certainly beats any parade at your local Chinatown there in the States. We'll put up some pictures of all the holiday craziness soon and in the meantime do our best to have an extra large helping of the unidentifiable smoked meat that seems to be all the rage this holiday. (You already got yours, didn't you? Mmmm. Yummy!)

Thats all for now!

Love from China,
John & Laura.
